Lesotho gears up for World Cup

The process of preparing for the 2010 World Cup has finally started in the neighbouring Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho.

The process of preparing for the 2010 World Cup has finally started in the neighbouring Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho.

It begun last week with the construction of an artificial pitch at Setsoto Stadium in Maseru at a cost of R5,6 million.

The artificial turf is financed by the Federation of International Football Associations through its Goal project in the Southern region.

Veteran Botswana- based administrator Ashford "Dumba" Mamelodi is in charge of the project in the Southern region.

The region, as per the constitution of Fifa, covers Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and the rest of southern Africa, bar Seychelles.

The project, which is the brainchild of Fifa president Sepp Blatter, in an effort to develop the sport in developing countries across Africa.

The Lesotho Football Association (Lefa) is excited that Setsoto is one of the stadiums selected by Fifa to benefit from the Goal project.

The construction will take about two months.

Tshiu "Buccaneer" Monne, Lefa executive committee member, said Setsoto will be closed for the duration of the construction process.

"It's such a great feeling that we are also benefiting from the project, the artificial turf is now used almost everywhere in Europe," said Monne.

"There are a number of countries in Africa who are also using it. It's good that we will also have one, which will help our players get familiar with it."

Setsoto, with a capacity of 25 000 spectators, is the only stadium in Lesotho but the country's government has indicated that they want to build another facility.

The government has also announced that they will also upgrade Setsoto in order for it to be used as a training base by one of the countries participating in the 2010 World Cup.

All the soccer matches will be played at other venues, while Lefa said they will make an announcement regarding the international fixtures.

Lesotho has produced some top players like Lehlohonolo Seema, Lekoane Lekoane, Mphungoa Lebajoa, Thabo Khoboli, Motlatsi Shale and Ts'epo Hlojeng.
