Police have made a breakthrough with the arrest of a suspect in connection with incidents of murder, rape and two attempted murders in Pietermaritzburg.
The suspect was arrested on Saturday night after he and his gang had allegedly raped a woman before dumping her in a cemetery.
Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said the gang had gone on a robbing spree in the early hours of Saturday.
"On Saturday, police received a report of a murder at Georgetown, near the library.
"On arrival, they found the body of an adult male with gunshot wounds lying on the side of the road, and about 50 metres away another adult male, also with gunshot wounds, lay dead on the side of the road," said Budhram.
He said investigations had established that both men had come to visit a female acquaintance in Georgetown. "She had become concerned when the men did not arrive, and a short while later she heard gunshots and a vehicle driving away.
"She went outside to investigate and saw one of the men she was expecting fleeing down the road screaming that he had been shot.
"He collapsed thereafter. She called an ambulance, and on arrival the paramedics certified him dead. The other body was that of another friend she was also expecting," he said.
Budhram said investigations had established that both men and a woman were confronted by two armed men who hijacked them in their Polo sedan.
He said the thugs had ordered the two men to get out of the car, and were shot as they left the car. The thugs drove away with the woman.
He said the woman was found near the Azalea cemetery in Imbali. She said she had been raped by both suspects.
Budhram said when they arrested the suspect in Edendale, he led them to where the Polo had been abandoned.
