Observation for 'killer'

A 50-year-old man arrested in connection with a shooting spree in Port Elizabeth last Wednesday will be sent for psychiatric observation, Eastern Cape police said yesterday.

A 50-year-old man arrested in connection with a shooting spree in Port Elizabeth last Wednesday will be sent for psychiatric observation, Eastern Cape police said yesterday.

Police spokesman Verna Brink said Steven Romer, of Walmer, was remanded for further investigations by the Port Elizabeth magistrate's court yesterday.

Romer allegedly opened fire at motorists during rush- hour traffic, killing a man and wounding two others.

Brink said Romer was held at the Mount Road police station until his next court appearance next Monday.

After next week's appearance, he is expected to be sent to the Fort England mental institution in Grahamstown for a psychiatric evaluation "as soon as a bed becomes available". - Sapa
