A 22-year-old man accused of circumcising his 18-year-old brother appeared in court yesterday.
The man was charged in terms of the Contravention of Circumcision Act at the Ngqamakwe magistrate's court in the Eastern Cape. It is alleged that the suspect circumcised his younger brother last Friday night at Dudumashe Village in Ngqamakwe.
Police spokesman Captain Jackson Manatha said: "It is alleged that their mother heard someone scream from the nearby kraal and she called the local men who discovered her older son circumcising his sibling."
The victim was taken to Butterworth Hospital for treatment. .
The Health Department and traditional leaders are working together to curb illegal circumcisions. This action has led to the arrest of a number of bogus traditional surgeons and nurses.
