Morale-boost win for Stars as they pip error-prone Ezenkosi

Free State Stars morale-boosting victory over Jomo Cosmos saw them claim third spot on the Premiership League table.

Free State Stars morale-boosting victory over Jomo Cosmos saw them claim third spot on the Premiership League table.

On-form Ea Lla Koto beat Cosmos 2-0 at Goble Park Stadium in Bethlehem at the weekend.

The hosts capitalised on Ezenkosi's defensive errors to settle the game in the first stanza.

The visitors were caught off guard in both instances, which saw Thulasizwe Mbuyane and Diyo Sibisi each score a goal.

Mbuyane broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute when he beat Cosmos' goalkeeper Zico Shiningayamwe with ease from a Kampamba Chintu's long clearance.

The ball fell in the path of the striker, who had no difficulty converting after outpacing Nkayiso Zondi.

Cosmos were exposed again in the 43rd minute and Sibisi was on hand to extend the lead, beating the keeper with a first-time left-footed strike.

Cosmos matched the hosts in the second half after making two tactical changes.

Cosmos mentor Jomo Sono introduced Helder Muinga and Paballo Mngomezulu for Zondi and Tshepo Moloto respectively.

This brought stability to the team but could not change the scoreboard.

Sono attributed the lapses of focus in defence to the absence of five experienced regulars and also expressed dissatisfaction with the state of the pitch.

However, he said he was happy with his team's performance in the second stanza.

"The fighting spirit was also good ahead of our next encounter with Stars in the Telkom Knockout Cup. It's going to be tough," he said.

Stars' coach Kinna Phiri said that they would continue to build on their current momentum.

"It was good to win to maintain the positive attitude even for future games.

"We will take each game as it comes," said the Malawian.
