Black Wednesday 30th anniversary events:

The Biko Memorial Convention has organised the following functions:

l Event: Symposium at DOCC, Orlando East at 2pm.

Speakers: Juby Mayet, a journalist and member of then banned Union of Black Journalists (UBJ) and Molefe Pheto, an artist and former activist.

l Event: Cultural evening at Moyo Restaurant, Zoo Lake, off Jan Smuts Avenue at 6.30pm for 7pm.

Speakers: Mosibudi Mangena, Azapo president and Minister of Science and Technology, Hlako Rachidi, last president of the banned Black Peoples Convention and Phil Mthimkhulu, journalist and academic former member of the UBJ.

l Media and Society Conference is continuing at Sandton Convention Centre, starting at 8am until 5pm.

l Acclaimed journalists such as Press Ombudsman Joe Thloloe, Jon Qwelane and Mafube Publications boss Thami Mazwai will speak at different venues on The Role of Journalism in Modern South Africa.

l About 30 journalists were to be honoured at a banquet in Johannesburg last night. These included the late Percy Qoboza and Aggrey Klaaste, Moegsien Williams, Don Mattera and Charles Nqakula. - Zinhle Mapumulo
