Mine shuts shaft after fatality

South Africa's platinum mines have claimed another life.

South Africa's platinum mines have claimed another life.

Anglo Platinum, the world's largest platinum producer, shut its Paardekraal shaft at its Rustenburg operations on Wednesday after a worker was killed in an accident.

The fatality brings to four the number of miners killed at platinum mines in the past two months. Nine miners have been killed across the industry in the past three weeks.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said another miner had also been critically injured in the Angloplat accident.

"A genocide is unfolding and the NUM is preparing for strike action that seeks to divert attention from the obsession with production targets to the one that deals with realising the sacrosanct human life," NUM said. - I-Net Bridge
