The driver of a truck that smashed into two classrooms at Mtapo High School in Ntuzuma, Durban, on Wednesday, was arrested yesterday for drunken driving.
Twenty two learners were injured.
The "drunk" driver, who cannot be named until he appears in court, lost control of his vehicle and smashed into the school fence and then into the school building, damaging two classrooms.
He was arrested after tests conducted on him after the accident proved that his alcohol-blood level was significantly above the limit.
Police spokesman Siwe Nxumalo said the man has been charged with reckless, negligent and drunken driving.
Yesterday, teaching at the school had not resumed, though Grade 12 learners continued with their exams as normal.
Provincial education MEC Ina Cronje and education officials made an urgent visit to the school yesterday to support the traumatised pupils and teachers after the accident.
Cronje said engineers were sent to the school to assess the damage and report on whether it was safe for pupils to return.
