Club worried about charges against him

Sipho Masombuka

Professional Soccer League outfit Mamelodi Sundowns has suspended Alex Shakoane.

This follows this week's drama in which Shakoane handed himself over to Soshanguve police on Wednesday morning after being accused of sexually abusing a minor.

Shakoane, the club's director of marketing and communication, was released on R1000 bail by the Ga-Rankuwa magistrate's court on Wednesday. He will appear again on November 14.

In a statement yesterday the club's management said they were concerned about the charges of indecent assault laid against Shakoane.

"Sundowns view these charges in a very serious light, particularly because of its commitment to opposing the abuse of women and children.

"The matter is currently before court and we will allow the judicial process to take its course, after which appropriate action will be taken."

The club's acting spokesman, Daniele Mudau yesterday said Shakoane had been suspended with immediate effect as an employee and from all his duties at Sundowns.

"Sundowns will make further announcements at the conclusion of the case," Mudau said.

Shakoane handed himself over to Mabopane police in Pretoria on Wednesday morning.

Shakoane was immediately charged with indecently assaulting the 15-year-old daughter of a colleague at the club.

The alleged incident happened outside the Morula Sun casino in Mabopane on October 7.

Tshwane police spokesman Inspector Paul Ramaloko said Shakoane was accompanied by his lawyer, Marius Bouer.

Shakoane appeared in the Ga- Rankuwa magistrate's court and was released on bail.

"The bail conditions are that he is not to contact witnesses in the case," said Ramaloko.
