The Soweto Rugby Club will be hosting a 24-hour rugby marathon game at Meadowlands Stadium, thought to be a world first. The event starts tomorrow at 7pm and ends at 7pm on Saturday.

Dali Ndebele, the event's organiser, said the aim of this initiative is to play one continuous game of rugby for 24 hours. Each team will have 75 players who will rotate and should end up playing about two-and-a-half hours each in the 24 hours. This equates to five players per position.

The objective of the two-day contest is to raise funds for the Soweto club and the Soweto Schools Rugby Project. Some of the proceeds will be donated to two Aids orphanages in Johannesburg.

"We have sent out requests to various companies to contribute towards the development of the sporting code by sponsoring the event at R200 per hour, totalling R4800,'' said Ndebele.

This event is for club players aged 21 or older and entry is free. Players will each be given R100 to cover transport costs. Registration for players is from 5pm to 6.15pm tomorrow.

The World Cup final between the Springboks and England on Saturday will be shown live on a big screen after the rugby marathon.

Rugby 101, the sports management company, will run the competition.

Those interested in contributing to the cause can contact Dali Ndebele at 082-708-0707 or Siphiwe Khumalo at 082-781-3606.
