A 44-year-old Limpopo man is fighting for his life at Musina Hospital after an angry mob allegedly assaulted him.

The man is accused of stabbing his ex-girlfriend to death near Musina on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident happened a week after the woman had acquired a protection order from the police against her ex-boyfriend, who had "assaulted and verbally abused her throughout their relationship".

Musina police spokesman Superintendent Maggie Mathebula said the incident happened at Phase 2, Matswale, where the woman was working at a road construction site with other workers.

"It is alleged that on arrival, the suspect produced a knife and stabbed the woman nine times all over the body without saying anything," said Mathebula.

The woman died at the scene.

Mathebula said that after the incident, an angry group of people who were working with the deceased caught the man and severely assaulted him before handing him over to Musina police.

No one has been arrested for the attack on the alleged killer.

According to the woman's friend, who did not want her name published, the problems started after the couple separated a few months ago.
