A second man was arrested in connection with an attempted armed robbery that resulted in a shootout between three security guards and about eight armed robbers in Mpumalanga.

The suspect was arrested yesterday after a task team, headed by Superintendent Botsotso Moukangwe, was tasked to investigate the incident.

The attempted armed robbery took place along the Badplaas/Caroline Road on Monday at about noon.

"The robbers were armed to the teeth with an assortment of weapons, including an AK-47 assault rifle, 9mm, 7.65 and .38 pistols.

"They, however, met their match in the security guards who returned fire after they had been shot at," said Mpumalanga police spokesman Superintendent Abie Khoabane.

"When they realised it was too hot, and one of them had been injured, they then jumped into their vehicles and sped off empty-handed, leaving their injured accomplice behind," said Khoabane.

The injured suspect was arrested and is under police guard at a hospital that cannot be disclosed. Police believe that several other robbers might have been injured during the shootout, and are therefore requesting any medical institution to be on the lookout for patients with unexplainable gunshot wounds.

l Meanwhile, police are looking for two gunmen who robbed Shivaan Hiralall on Monday night.

Hiralall is the manager of Excel petrol station at Kingross. The robbers escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash and four cellphones.
