A respected Ngwavuma traditional leader appeared in the Ngwavuma magistrate's court yesterday for the alleged rape of his granddaughter.
Police reports indicate that the child was 12 when she was first raped in 2005.
The suspect was arrested last week. At the time of going to press his bail hearing was still on.
It is alleged the man raped his granddaughter two years ago when she was staying with him and her grandmother.
He allegedly swore her to secrecy because of his status in the area.
When the child visited her mother in Mtubatuba she noticed behavioural changes in her daughter and reported the matter to local police.
l In a separate incident, a man from the same area was arrested for allegedly raping a virgin.
Virginity inspectors discovered that a 15-year-old girl had been violated. When confronted, she pointed out a well-known man in the community.
Another man is also behind bars after allegedly repeatedly raping his own daughter.
The girl, who is also under-age, was confronted by her teachers after realising that she was not performing up to her usual standard.
When questioned, she informed them that her father had been raping her.
The men are kept at the Ngwavuma police cells.
