The introduction of more rugby matches at schools level will create interest of the sport among pupils from learning institutions in the townships.

This is the view of Sibusiso Kunene, 13, a pupil at Zola Primary School in Soweto.

Kunene is the captain of the school's rugby team and has inspired his side to an emphatic 15-5 victory over Thathani at the recent final of the Soweto Primary School Rugby League Tournament in Roodepoort.

Flank Kunene, who is also the skipper of the Soweto Rugby Club's junior side, led by example as he scored 10 of the 15 points.

" We need to play more games in the season and establish a primary schools league in our township," he said.

"I don't have any doubt in my mind that this will go a long way in attracting more pupils into the sport. This will also be good to the development of rugby at schools in the townships.

"We thank the Golden Lions Rugby Union for staging such a successful tournament towards the development of rugby,'' said Kunene.

Generally, the Zola youngsters defended magnificently and their loose forwards gave the struggling Thathani a torrid time whenever in possession.

In the first half Zola were leading 12-5 through Kunene's try and conversion, and Shaun Matiyi's try while Zingisa Ntshinga scored a try for Thathani.

Grade 7 student Kunene, who was selected to the Youth School Excellence Programme under-13 side that took part in the Easter Festival in April, put the result beyond doubt with a penalty.

Other results: Under-11: King Zwilithili 10, Zola 5; Under-12: Zola 10, Zwelithili 5.
