Mbuso Sylvester Khumalo, 25, the grade 12 pupil accused of shooting a Mpumalanga policeman on the school premises, has been expelled from the school while still on the run from police.

Three KaNyamazane police officers had gone to Mayibuye High School in Pienaar to arrest Khumalo in connection with the hijacking and murder of Father Allard Mako Omi when the shooting happened last Wednesday.

Khumalo's younger brother, Skhumbuzo, 21, allegedly warned him of the police's presence.

Khumalo allegedly produced two guns and began shooting at the officers before he jumped over a fence and ran away.

Constable Patrick Fakude, 28, was shot in the leg and was admitted to the Nelspruit Medi-Clinic where he is still recovering.

The incident happened shortly after the Khumalo brothers had written their English first paper matric examination.

"The Mpumalanga department of education views this incident seriously and considers Mbuso Sylvester Khumalo to be a serious danger to all in the school.

"To this effect the department has dismissed Mbuso Sylvester Khumalo with immediate effect," said Mpumalanga education department spokesman, Hlahla Ngwenya.

Ngwenya said the department regretted the shooting incident at the school and wished Fakude a speedy recovery.

Meanwhile, Skhumbuzo Khumalo was remanded in custody after appearing in the KaBokweni magistrate's court last week.

He was charged with defeating the ends of justice and is expected to appear before the same court today.
