The four men who shot and killed actor Patrick 'Kid' Mokoena in a bar in Jeppe, Johannesburg, also robbed the venue taking with them an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.
Mokoena was shot dead on Saturday night.
He died instantly.
Police spokesman Sefako Xaba said Mokoena was shot twice in the stomach and twice in the head.
"Four men entered the Why Not bar and shot him four times.
"One of the suspects jumped over the counter and took cash from the till, the suspects then escaped," said Xaba.
Mokoena, who was also the chief executive of an independent label called Why Not Entertainment, played a character as a taxi driver on the SABC1 drama series Soul City. He also had a cameo role in Muvhango.
Brian Mokoena, Kid's relative and colleague at the record label, said he was a friendly person.
"Kid could get along with anyone from a taxi driver to a superstar, that is how wonderful he was," said Mokoena.
Kwaito group Beat Nutz, were released under the Why Not Entertainment label and produced by Durban's Finest DJ Tira.
Mokoena said that Kid is survived by two wives and five children.
