Residents of Mfekayi reserve in Mtubatuba, northern Zululand, have expressed outrage after an 80-year-old grandmother was raped at the weekend.
The incident happened on Saturday night. Neighbours say it is not the first time the woman has been raped.
Raymond Mfeka, chairman of the community policing forum, was the first person to visit the victim on Sunday morning.
"I was shocked when a neighbour told me she had been raped before."
Mfeka said it broke his heart to learn the elderly woman was also allegedly abused by her family, who he said only visited her after she had been paid her old-age social grant.
"When a neighbour took the woman in out of kindness, the family threatened her," he said.
