Sowetan television, commissioned by SABC Education, is producing the educational programme, 48 Hours, which targets pupils in Grades 10 to 12 with helpful information, including career guidance and counselling.

48 Hours is due to be screened on SABC2 on Saturdays at 6.30pm from October 13 to April 5 next year. Each episode is 24 minutes long.

Launched officially at the Sowetan offices in Industria, Johannesburg, 48 Hours has been designed to bring the world of work to South Africa's goal-oriented youth, using real-life and real-time experiential encounters, with up to two or more students shadowing and learning from a professional like a journalist, doctor or company manager.

Spending time with the different professionals will allow the students to learn as much as possible - while asking as many questions as is possible - for about two days, and even taking on menial chores.

48 Hours will also focus on pre-teen advice on issues such as growing up healthy, friendships and peer pressure, love, sex and relationships, entrepreneurship, inner workings of the work environment, stress and how to deal with life's myriad pressures. - Victor Mecoamere
