This has been a harrowing year in which education was paralysed by strikes, protests and poor service delivery.
There are areas where schools are rudimentary structures not conducive to learning. Many households go to sleep hungry and often struggle to cope in class.
Others have to study by candlelight in noisy neighbourhoods.
