The leader of the newly formed New Vision Party in Limpopo, Ike Kekana, believes the party will be ready to contest for seats in the national and provincial legislatures come the 2009 general elections.
The New Vision Party (NVP) was formed shortly before the floor-crossing window period opened on September 1.
It comprises former members of the United Independent Front (UIF) who left with Kekana, pictured, when he defected to form his own party.
Addressing the media in Polokwane yesterday, Kekana said the NVP was recruiting members to challenge well-established parties in the 2009 elections.
"The New Vision Party is a party with ambition, and come the 2009 elections, we will be jostling for seats in both national and provincial legislatures," Kekana said.
He said the party had already established 164 branches in Limpopo and 67 in the Eastern Cape. They also have branches in Gauteng and North West, he said without mentioning figures.
"To show that we started on a high note, we already have six councillors in the Eastern Cape.
"This is a clear sign that we will be ready for any challenges in the 2009 elections," he said.
He said the party was already registered with the Independent Electoral Commission.
Kekana, who was fired by the UIF executive, said his seat in the Limpopo legislature would not be taken by anyone before the matter was finalised in court.
