More than 599000 pupils are expected to sit for the national final matric examinations this morning.

They will write the English first paper across the 8000 centres countrywide.

This year's high school pupils will be the last group to sit for the "old" matric examinations.

From next year, Grade 12 pupils will write the new outcomes-based education examination.

The Education Department has set aside May and June next year for those pupils who may still need to complete their outstanding subjects and pass matric.

This arrangement will run until 2011.

Small groups started writing Computer Studies yesterday. Minister of Education, Naledi Pandor, wished the Grade 12 learners well.
