Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu spent his 76th birthday without his wife on Sunday.

Tutu spent the day at his Cape Town home while his wife, Leah, was attending the special Olympics in Shanghai.

Unlike on his 75th birthday last year, when he invited the who's who in South Africa and had his wife by his side, this time Tutu invited only a few friends and members of his congregation.

"He has been travelling a lot of late, and I think he wanted it to be that way," said his spokesman Lavinia Brown.

Among the people he invited were former Miss South Africa Thuli Sithole, US actress Alfre Woodard, comedian Marc Lottering and Nelson Mandela.
