The Jazz Meets Symphony music initiative that began three years ago continues to thrill music lovers.
Established by the Jazz Foundation, the event gives musicians an opportunity to explore their talents, while engaging two disciplines in perfect harmony.
Having started at the Linder Auditorium, Parktown, Johannesburg in 2005, giving Gauteng fans a chance to experience the music, Jazz Meets Symphony is this year going to give Durban a taste.
It will take place at the Durban City Hall on October 24. On October 27 it will be happening at the Theatre on the Track, in Joburg.
Then it featured Zim Ngqawana who was a music director and other great jazz singers. This year Jazz Meets Symphony features artists such as Prince Lengoasa who will be a musical director. Also added in the festival to balance the equation is Mary Stallings of the US.
Born in California in 1939, Stalling is a celebrated singer. She will bring her experience in jazz that dates back to when she was eight years old.
Another singer who will give audiences a different feel is US female jazz singer Opie Bellas.
Bellas, who is defined as a jazz singer from the old school, has a reputable profile as a jazz singer. Locals will be represented by musicians such as Winston Mankunku Ngozi and Judith Sephuma who will be there to showcase local talent with a 66-piece orchestra combo.
Mankunku has become a legend in his own time, and is a name that evokes powerful musical images for music lovers all over southern Africa.
Cape Town-born Mankunku has been a beacon for trends and styles in the genre. He is the foremost exponent of the tenor saxophone and one of the most respected composers in jazz.
