The Telkom Knockout, the most lucrative tournament in the league, yesterday unveiled new incentives for players, with R750000 on offer for top performers in the tournament.

The mouth-watering incentives will reward outstand players in the following categories: goalkeeper, defender, midfielder, goal scorer and player of the tournament.

The player who scores a hat trick in the final will also receive a prize.

The goalkeeper, midfielder and defender of the tournament will pocket R100 000 each, as will the player who scores a hat trick in the final.

The top goal scorer of the tournament receives R150000 and the player of the tournament pockets R200 000.

Telkom advertising and sponsorship executive Zikie Molusi said they hoped the players would entertain fans with exciting football and an attack- minded approach during the competition.

He was speaking at the quarterfinal draw held at Wanderers Cricket Club in Johannesburg yesterday.

"The sponsors have introduced the incentive programme to motivate individual players and to improve the game of football in the country," he said.

"This is our second season and we're looking at ways and means of bringing the fans back to the stadiums.

"We hope that the incentives will elevate the standard of play.

"The awards are to encourage skilful play, goal scoring and to generally raise the level of the competition.

"Again this is to reward players who represented their respective teams and the sport with distinction and distinguished themselves from the rest in different aspects of the game," said Molusi.

He explained that the incentives will in no way affect the man of the match awards.

Molusi said that even supporters would be getting incentives from the competition if they predict the score and select the man of the match.

"They also get free goodies from the sponsors," said Molusi.

The quarterfinal draw: Kaizer Chiefs v SuperSport United; Benoni Premier United v Mamelodi Sundowns; Free State Stars v Jomo Cosmos; AmaZulu v Bloemfontein Celtic.
