The Macufe Festival that ended yesterday in Bloemfontein was a disaster of monumental proportions. Some artists billed to perform did not turn up because "they were not paid by the organisers".
Almost all shows started late. Audiences shunned the festival, with the kwaito festival on Friday attracting only 50 people.
Even the reggae festival on Thursday, featuring popular international reggae star Lucky Dube, did not cut it. It attracted about 200 people, most of whom were artists..
The only redeeming element of the chaotic festival was the jazz festival on Saturday at the Bloemfontein showgrounds. The festival attracted thousands of jazz fans. It featured Budaza, Selaelo Selota, Sello Galane, Peter Ntwane and Simphiwe Dana.
What saved the festival was the free SABC roadshow that took place in Rocklands, Botshabelo, and Hoffman Square. It attracted thousands of people who watched HHP, Thembi Seete and Twasa perform. The crowds also rubbed shoulders with SABC presenters.
Ironically, Macufe was ce-lebrating its 10th anniversary.
