Church leads campaign to clean up Africa

Everyone is invited to join a major clean-up exercise throughout Africa by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints on October 27.

Everyone is invited to join a major clean-up exercise throughout Africa by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints on October 27.

It is estimated that the event, themed Renew, Revive and Revitalise, will involve about 100000 people (most of whom are the church's members) volunteering about 400000 hours of community service, all in one special, historical day.

Leon Holmes and Sean Donnelly, who are the church's public affairs director and Johannesburg chairman respectively, believe that the clean-up effort will help galvanise both the church's congregants and other community members into assuming a habit of cleaning and beautifying their surroundings and engender in others, through their illustrations, the idea of taking more pride in their neighbourhoods.

"We need to take upon ourselves the responsibility of keeping our own environment clean and tidy," Holmes said.

Donnelly said: "When we take care of the little things, the bigger issues will take care of themselves," citing the well-documented approach of former New York city mayor, Rudolph William Louis "Rudy" Giuliani, who initiated improvements in the city's quality of life, that led to a reduction in crime to record lows between 1994 and 2001.

Holmes and Donnelly said they hoped that the exercise will strike the heart of litter problems in South Africa and throughout mainland Africa.

"When we see our neighbour cleaning up our mess and not a government-paid clean-up team or refuse collectors, we may think twice before throwing a packet or can out of our houses' or cars' windows," Holmes and Donnelly said in a statement.

The duo said they hoped that inviting congregants and leaders of other churches and a diverse range of other community members would help promote good, healthy community and inter-faith relations, which is vital in building a united voice for positive change in South Africa and across mother Africa.
