Disabled golfer Harry Gundana will for the first time set foot in India after winning the Golf Digest Johnnie Walker Striding Man title at Pezula Resort in Knysna this year.
Gundana was selected with seven other finalists to take part in the second event where they were required to demonstrate their character, personality, style and golfing skill on and off the championship course. The 47-year-old Gundana from Soweto was over the moon in hearing that he had won the trip for two to India.
"I am very happy to have won the Golf Digest Johnnie Walker Striding Man competition," he said on hearing the news.
"I never thought that I would win the title what with all the other great players in the competition. I am thrilled to be going overseas."
Gundana won an all-expenses paid trip for two to the 2008 Johnnie Walker Classic to be played in New Delhi, India from February 28 to March 2.
He started playing golf at the age of 19 while working as a caddie. In 1998 he injured his spine in a car accident and was declared a paraplegic by doctors.Determined to prove them wrong and walk again, Harry devoted all his time to therapy.
After 18 months he was able to stand with the help of crutches. He started accompanying friends to the golf course and after much practice was able to play again.
'India, here I come'
