Farouk Kadodia, Maritzburg United's chairman, has anticipated a tough run in the National First Division (NFD) but is hopeful his charges will be equal to the task.

"It is not going to be easy in this league and we will need to work hard to succeed," said Kadodia yesterday.

His team made a good start in the NFD when they beat last season's strugglers Western Province United 1-0 in a Coastal Stream match in Pietermaritzburg on Friday.

The goal was scored by their new recruit, Godfrey Doboro.

"Obviously, we are all excited by the win but we are not going to relax. We will continue to work hard to ensure that we don't disappoint in our first season in this league," said Kadodia.

"Our aim is to return to the Premiership but I can't say now that we will gain promotion. There is a still a long way to go."

Kadodia has managed to retain some of the experienced players at the team and the arrival of Doboro has been hailed by many people.

The players who decided to go down with United, who are now coached by Ian Palmer, include Graham King, Collen Zimba, Fadlu Davids and Lynch Pule.

Hanover Park, newcomers in the Coastal Stream, stole a point when they played to a 1-all draw against FC Cape Town in a Cape Town derby at Blue Waters Stadium.

Nathi Lions beat Bay United 1-0 in Umlazi, but their home boys Durban Stars failed to shine on the road as they were pipped 2-1 by Ikapa Sporting (formerly Fidentia Rangers) at Erica Park Stadium.

Five goals were scored from four matches in the Inland Stream that saw Dynamos occupy top position on the log.

The Dynamites beat Mpumalanga Black Aces 2-1 at Lulekani Stadium.

FC AK also made a good start with a 1-0 win over rookies African Warriors in a match that was played at Charles Mopeli Stadium.

University of Pretoria, the 2006-07 platinum playoffs finalists, pocketed three points when they beat Witbank Spurs 1-0 at Atlantic Stadium and Kenny Ndlazi's GaRankuwa United and Winnerspark fought out a scoreless draw in Mabopane.
