Stop bickering and plan to recruit the best players

The recent bickering, accusations and counter-accusations among Carlos Alberto Parreira, the PSL and Safa were unnecessary.

The recent bickering, accusations and counter-accusations among Carlos Alberto Parreira, the PSL and Safa were unnecessary.

Bad planning continues to beset our football. Everybody involved knew a long time ago that there would be Cosafa games at some stage. They also knew that it has to be business as usual at the PSL.

A heart-warming story emerged from the recent Twenty20 when cricketer Sohail Tanvir, who was an unknown to many influential Pakistanis, performed heroics. Cricket is Pakistan's national sport as soccer is ours.

Why can't we be party to such a story? The problem is that most national football coaches are obsessed with ready-made players. It is for that reason that we don't usually see players from the National First Division in Bafana. PSL players are not necessarily the best in the country - there are others.

Many excellent players have failed trials at various PSL clubs not because they were bad players, but because trials are not the best place to spot great players. The best place is in their natural environment where they are surrounded by fellow players with whom they feel comfortable. Some players freeze in the company of strangers.

Clubs should search for good players, not the other way round. There is nothing stopping Parreira from spotting a gem who is dying to prove himself, as Tanvir did.
