Five days on, the battered and bloodied tiny body of a girl aged between 15 and 16 still lies unidentified in a Soweto mortuary.

So far three families whose children have disappeared have gone to the mortuary to ensure she is not their kin. All went away without identifying her.

The girl's body was found in a veld on Sunday near Power Park in Orlando where the Soweto Beach Party was held.

The half-naked girl was wearing only a short, blue denim skirt when Sowetan saw her body at the Diepkloof government mortuary.

She had three stab wounds and a gaping hole in her neck and half of her face was covered in blood.

Police suspect she was raped.

And a reveller who wanted to remain anonymous, said he was certain the girl had been raped.

"She and her friends hung around with six guys and drank liquor. I heard her asking them if they wanted to sleep with her. I think she was joking because she was too drunk," he said.

He claims that the six guys took the girl to a hill next to the venue where they gang-raped her.

"Everyone saw what happened but did not do anything to help."

Orlando police spokesman Captain Nomvula Mbense said they had made no progress in the case and that no arrests had yet been made.

Sowetan saw the dead girl when we accompanied the family of Refiloe Madiba, 17, of Moletsane, Soweto, who has now been found.
