It is meant to house men and women who uphold the law but it's one of the most unsafe buildings in Pretoria, the country's administrative capital.
And on Friday the Labour Department ordered the immediate closure of the SAPS detective's unit in Cullinan.
This was after inspectors found that the condition of the Criminal Investigation Department Building contravened the Occupational Health and Safety Act of 1993.
"The inspectors revealed the building as threatening or likely to threaten the health and safety of those who use it," said departmental spokesman Zolisa Sigabi.
Sigabi said according to the prohibition notice issued, the use of CID Building as offices has been prohibited since the ceilings of the building were in a poor state because of water leaks, which also affected the electrical wiring in the building.
"In terms of the order, the SAPS is required to obtain a certificate of compliance for electricity installation in the building."
Sigabi said the conditions of the CID Building left her department with no choice but to stop its continued use.
Another building used by the SANDF was closed three months ago after a similar prohibition order was issued by the Labour Department.
