Premier Soccer League bosses will today table the contentious 10 percent commission issue for sourcing sponsorship for the league.
The outcome of the meeting is likely to bring to an end this matter, which has clearly divided affiliates of the PSL, with some giving the nod to bonuses, others opposing the idea, while some chose to sit on the fence.
According to a communique issued by Ronnie Schloss, PSL chief operating officer, the meeting will deal more with the acquisition of the R500 million league sponsorship from Absa.
The bonuses for people who sourced sponsorship for the PSL and the publicity received subsequent to the announcement of the deal with the bank will also be discussed.
This was after it emerged at the weekend that members of the sponsorship committee who negotiated the deal are likely to share R50 million in commission.
Some club chairmen voiced their disapproval at the fact that some executive committee members would receive a 10 percent commission.
The noise around the bank's deal gained momentum when Trevor Manuel, the minister of finance, wrote to the bank advising it not to pay bonuses to the sponsorship committee members.
Members of the committee who negotiated the deal included Irvin Khoza (PSL chairman), chairman of the league's finance committee Kaizer Motaung , Mato Madlala (PSL executive member), Trevor Phillips, the former chief executive of the PSL, and consultant Peter Mancer.
However, Madlala has rubbished allegations that they were bent on getting more sponsorship for self enrichment.
Madlala said their primary objective was to raise more funds for the PSL, adding there was nothing sinister with the practise of paying bonuses.
Sowetan has learnt that a series of meetings took place in the past two days between the PSL and the bank's top brass.
A media briefing on the issue is billed for this afternoon.
