A well-known Mpumalanga businessman and his wife are in a serious condition in hospital after gunmen shot him twice in the neck, wounded his wife and killed his brother at their home in Lefiso near Marapyane.
Joseph Moselakgomo, 41, and his wife, Maria, 38, were both admitted to a local hospital with neck and leg wounds, while his brother, Phineas, 28, who was shot in the forehead, died on the scene.
The attack occurred at the Moselakgomo family home at about 8pm on Saturday.
A relative said the family had gathered to discuss the unveiling of a tombstone.
A survivor and sister of the dead man, Martina Moselakgomo, said two gunmen burst into the house, grabbed Joseph's son, Thuso, 16, by the neck inside the kitchen and ordered him to lead them to his father, who was among the eight people gathered in the dining room.
"Thuso led the gunmen to the dining room, where we had all gathered, they pushed him towards us and without a word, opened fire randomly, hitting the three in the process.
"The rest of us were fortunate because we were able find cover behind the sofas and under the table while bullets flew all over the house."
After the shooting, the shocked survivors ran out of the house where they found Phineas.
He had been shot in the forehead, Joseph twice in the neck and Maria in the leg.
"I could not stop crying and screaming for help, I still cannot believe that seven of my relatives were almost all killed at once."
A relative, who did not want to be named, told Sowetan he had left the house two hours before the shooting.
"I was out with my friends when I received a call from my brother who told me that my other brother was dead.
"I thought it was a joke. When I got back to the house, I found the yard packed with onlookers.
"The police asked me to stay outside for about 30 minutes and when I finally got in, I found my brother lying in a pool of blood with a bullet wound to his forehead.
"Everybody was screaming and crying but I just sat on the sofa and stared at him in disbelief," he said.
Police spokesman Hastine Chaane said: "The suspects are still at large and we have opened a case of murder and attempted murder".
Chaane appealed to anyone with information to approach the police immediately.
