The South African Revenue Service (Sars) is to issue summonses to multiple offenders who have neglected to submit their tax returns, a Sars spokesman said yesterday.

"Sars has identified thousands of multiple offenders across the country who owe Sars a total of R450000 in outstanding tax returns," Yolisa Pikie said, adding that many of the people have failed to submit a return for several years.

About 250 to 300 summonses will be issued in the Durban North, Umhlanga and La Lucia areas and about 150 in the Eastern Cape, Summerstrand and Walmer areas. Gauteng is to issue over 300 summonses in Pretoria, Midrand and Johannesburg.

The issuing of summonses will continue until all the identified taxpayers have been reached.

The deadline for submission of the 2007 tax returns is October 31. - Sapa
