The East London Hospital complex was unable to confirm yesterday whether outspoken doctor Nokuzola Ntshona had been fired.
"I can't confirm anything. We're waiting for documentation," said Toni van Niekerk, the hospital's press liaison officer.
Ntshona's union representative, Ruben Opperman of Hospersa, said he had not heard from the Health department about the matter.
On Tuesday, Ntshona said she had been fired by the Eastern Cape department of Health, the SABC reported. She said she had been informed by her defence team that a disciplinary committee had ruled that she would not resume her duties.
Ntshona was found guilty by the health department on three charges of speaking out against the department's handling of the Frere Hospital maternity saga. She was suspended last month after writing to the Office of the President on conditions at the hospital. Ntshona was expected to appear in court in Stutterheim yesterday on a charge of drunken driving. - Sapa
