DA call for council supervision

The DA in the Sekhukhune area of Limpopo has urged that the troubled Makhuduthamaga Municipality in Jane Furse be put under an administrator because it has apparently failed.

In terms of Section 139 of the Municipal Structures Act, municipalities that fail to perform should be put under an administrator.

In August last year, the municipality had put R27million into a "money market" investment to be used for service delivery projects.

Sekhukhune was identified by President Thabo Mbeki as a nodal point which needed urgent attention for development.

The Auditor-General's report said that no mention was made of the whereabouts of the R27million and nobody could account for it.

Nomvula Modibetsane, DA spokesman in the Greater Sekhukhune District Municipality, said the department of local and provincial government had seconded a project facilitator to help Makhuduthamaga with ideas on how to use the money, after the council resolved on plans to financially develop the area.

But that was not to be. The Auditor-General could not find documents that coherently explain how the money was used.
