Nurturing nurses

The government's move to improve the salaries of nurses, though a step long overdue, should be welcomed.

The government's move to improve the salaries of nurses, though a step long overdue, should be welcomed.

Nurses have long been treated with disrespect, a situation that forced many to emigrate, looking for better employment opportunities.

In the words of Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, nurses are the bedrock of the public health sector.

The minister and trade unions recently signed an agreement set to pave the way for the return of scores of nurses. The deal provides for the allocation of R1,458 billion to adjust salaries in addition to the 7,5percent increase public servants received early this year.

While we welcome this development, we would urge the minister to also move swiftly in addressing the problem of staff shortages, lack of proper facilities and service delivery at most health centres.
