Another shot in the arm for soccer

Local soccer has achieved another success with the advent of a new sponsor to bankroll its 16-team league.

Local soccer has achieved another success with the advent of a new sponsor to bankroll its 16-team league.

With a league competition sponsored to a mouth-watering R500million, Premier Soccer League clubs face a mammoth task in justifying the confidence increasingly being shown by the private sector in its growing brand.

Clubs need to match this gesture on the field of play with entertaining football and with good governance. Running clubs as a professional business is no longer an option but mandatory for them to survive in the highly competitive environment.

No longer will clubs proffer lack of resources as an excuse for pallid performances.

More so considering that the league's champions - the winners - will in future pocket no less than R8 million as first prize, thanks to Absa who have become the new league sponsors.

This announcement comes barely a month after the PSL, Africa's model league, clinched a R1,6billion deal with SuperSport International for TV rights.

The PSL, which sometimes finds itself with egg on its face because of the embarrassing behaviour of some of its members, deserves a round of applause this time for securing sponsorship that is clearly geared at the betterment of our professional soccer.
