Three men accused of attempting to remove an ATM and carry it home were all remanded in custody pending their next court appearance on October 2.
They appeared briefly before the Mkhobolo magistrate's court on Friday. Geelboy Ntuli (27), Vusi Mnguni (28) and Cyprian Khumalo (39) were not asked to plead on attempted robbery charges.
The suspects were arrested at Kwaggafontein near Kwa-Mhlanga in the early hours of Friday, after police spotted and stopped a white bakkie without plate numbers.
One of the bakkie's occupants jumped off and ran away but police managed to prevent the three from escaping.
"We found the suspects in possession of an R5 rifle with two fully-loaded magazines, a 9mm pistol and a revolver, both of which were fully loaded," said Mpumalanga provincial police spokesman Captain Leonard Hlathi on Monday.
"The suspects told us that they were about to grind an ATM, load it into the bakkie and take it home. To support this, we found a grinder as well as grinder blades in their possession," said Hlathi.
He said the suspects would be questioned and possibly linked to other ATM bombings around the Siyabuswa and KwaMhlanga areas.
"We believe this is a breakthrough because we believe these suspects are notorious armed robbers that have been terrorising the Siyabuswa community for a long time," said Hlathi.
He asked members of the community to report any suspicious-looking person near an ATM or businesses by calling the nearest police station.
