The fight fraternity in KwaZulu-Natal has missed a golden opportunity to witness its local hero Moruti Mthalane from Ntuzuma fighting for the WBC International flyweight title.
Promoter Pat Molefe intended staging this fight in Durban but the unavailability of financial injection from that side forced him to take it to Johannesburg's Park Station.
Mthalane will on Saturday night collide with Apol Suico of the Philippines for the vacant WBC International flyweight title. It was vacated by stablemate Mhikiza Myekeni, whose career was cut short by a near fatal car accident last year.
Park Station is actually where the Nick Durandt-trained Mthalane made an impression in 2004. He stopped Vincent Mogotsi in seven rounds.
Mthalane also flattened both Thembelani Maphuma and Mbulelo Nyanda in six rounds at that venue. They are two of the seven opponents that Mthalane fought under Molefe's Rainbow Boxing Promotions. Molefe also staged the South African title fight which Mthalane won in a sixth round stoppage over Akhona Aliva in East London in August last year. It was Molefe also who staged Mthalane's first defence over Xola Sifama (TKO5) at Jabulani Mall in Soweto in June.
