A 39-year-old man arrested for drunken driving in Mpumalanga allegedly hanged himself with a blanket in the cell he was locked in on Saturday night.

The man, who cannot be identified until his immediate family members have been informed, hanged himself on a cell window at about 9.30pm.

Nelspruit police spokesman Inspector Davie Pretorious told Sowetan that the man was earlier involved in a road accident before his arrest.

The accident happened at about 7.20pm.

It took the man less than two hours after the accident to kill himself.

Pretorious said the man's wife arrived at the police station shortly after his arrest and tried to arrange for his bail.

"It was then that it was established that the man had committed suicide.

"We do not suspect any foul play in the matter but police investigations are continuing," said Pretorious.

The man was alone in the cell.
