A 38-year-old police inspector was shot dead after responding to an emergency call at Dube Hostel in Soweto yesterday.
Police spokesman Superintendent Thembi Nkwashu said the policewoman was robbed of her cellphone at gunpoint as she was calling for a back-up.
She said the incident happened at about 8am.
Nkwashu said residents stopped a patrolling police vehicle after an unidentified man had been shot dead at the hostel.
"Two policeman chased the suspects in their police vehicle and the gunmen started shooting at them."
Nkwashu said the two officers are attached to the Meadowlands Crime Prevention Unit.
Nkwashu said six policemen were killed last month.
She condemned the ongoing killings of police officers.
"No arrests have been made and police are investigating cases of murder, attempted murder and armed robbery," Nkwashu added.
