The last thing Portia Kgantsi needed before she was whisked away to start her 10- year jail term on Friday was a blanket from an Angolan businessman Sergio Joao Christiano.

Christiano spent seven years awaiting trial on nine charges that included attempted murder, rape, kidnapping, assault and robbery. He was acquitted of all charges in May.

He said he and Kgantsi had struck a friendship before he was arrested in 1999. "Portia was a friend to my girlfriend. She gave me legal advice."

Speaking outside court, Christiano said he had sent someone to buy Kgantsi a blanket.

He said Kgantsi had told him the police would bring her in front of the building to collect the blanket.

About 15 minutes later, Kgantsi was driven past the court to prison. The blanket had not been delivered.
