A Durban police officer is expected to appear in court soon on rape charges after he was arrested for allegedly raping a woman on Sunday.

The officer was reportedly patrolling with a colleague when they spotted a group of women urinating in public.

The officers allegedly demanded a fine of R100 from each of the women.

Police spokesman Vincent Mdunge said the women had been allegedly drinking at a tavern in Rosebush.

Mdunge said the women allegedly paid the amount demanded by the officers, but no receipts were issued.

"The officers allegedly forced one of the women into the police van.

"The suspect first dropped off his colleague along the way and then proceeded to a deserted spot of Brighton Beach where he allegedly raped the woman at gunpoint," said Mdunge.

Mdunge said the officer then drove the woman back to where he had picked her up.

He said the woman called her friends and they went to open a case of rape at the nearest police station.

"While at the police station the victim spotted the officer who had allegedly raped her and notified other officers.

"He was arrested on the spot," said Mdunge.
