Celebrating the exploits of its icons helps a nation, not only to pause and rededicate itself to its democratic ideals, but also to re-inculcate cherished values in its collective memory and national consciousness.

In this spirit we proudly welcome the honours bestowed on Oliver Tambo, Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu and Robert Sobukwe, at a ceremonies yesterday.

The quartet no doubt personify the democratic values that form the foundations of this country.

As fathers of our nation, they will continue to symbolise the character and spirit of South Africa.
