Netcare 911 had earlier responded to a report of a serious collision at the N12/M1 split near Southgate mall, in southern Johannesburg.
Towing services were parked in the emergency lane alongside the highway near the accident scene.
At the scene of the accident, in which a truck had hit a minibus taxi, another tow truck driver swerved his vehicle and then lost control.
He crashed into two tow trucks which were already at the scene of the first accident, hitting the two drivers.
One of them died at the scene and the other driver and two occupants of one of the tow trucks, were injured.
They were taken to Milpark Hospital. - Sapa
