Stars dim gutsy Leopards

Free State Stars moved up to third position in the Premier Soccer League's table yesterday after defeating Black Leopards 2-0 at Goble Park Stadium.

Sifiso Vilakazi and Diyo Sibisi scored for Ea lla koto, who finished the game with 10 men after Ruben Cloete received his marching orders four minutes from the end.

Stars, who were the hosts, threatened from the outset with Sibisi threatening as early as the sixth minute when he forced Leopards Ephraim Tjihonge into producing a superb save to tip his effort around the post for a corner, and Stars threatened a minute later when Jimmy Kauleza hit the bar from the edge of the area.

Vilakazi put Free State Stars ahead in the 24th minute when he latched onto a cross by Sibisi before rifling home a low shot inside the area.

Vilakazi should have doubled their lead 10 minutes later when he shot over the bar from close range following a superb cross Cloete.

The match remained 1-0 at the break. Stars continued their dominance in the second stanza, Vilakazi, again the main threat. The striker went close in the 54th minute when his attempt flew just over the bar. Sibisi almost doubled their lead two minutes later when he sent his header just wide of the goals from a corner by Kauleza.

However Sibisi increased his lead at the top of the scorer's charts when he scored with a low shot after being set up by Vilakazi in the 76th minute.

Cloete received his marching orders after collecting his second yellow card in the 86th minute. - Kickoff
