Colin "Malombo Jazzmaker" Mkhize, one of Soweto's most lethal strikers of yester-year, has died after a short illness.

Speaking on behalf of the family yesterday, Billy Mkhize said his relative played for Western Rangers in his heyday.

"He was a great striker, many goalkeepers used to literally run away when he was in possession. It was like he packed dynamite in his boots," he said.

"He was an absolute striker that any coach wanted to have in his team. During his playing days, 'Malombo Jazzmaker' was a close friend of Elias 'Shuffle' Mokopane."

He was the father of Lerato Mkhize, a rising woman sports administrator employed by Athletics South Africa (ASA) in the development department.

Lerato is a former president of the South African Student Sports Union. She has also served on various committees of continental and international sports bodies.

Mkhize will be buried at Lenasia Cemetery on Saturday. The funeral service will take place at Mavis Hall in White City at 8.30am. - Ramatsiyi Moholoa
