A Mpumalanga policeman appeared briefly in a Malelane circuit court on Monday on charges of raping his girlfriend at gunpoint.

Constable Elvis Maluleka, who is attached to the Lebombo border post, was not asked to plead.

He was released on R500 bail pending his next court appearance on October 9.

Maluleka allegedly raped the 23-year-old woman in his room at the Komatipoort police barracks on August 18.

He is alleged to have called the woman on her cellphone and asked to take her out, to which she agreed.

Komatipoort police spokesman, Constable Richard Khumalo, told Sowetan that the suspect and the victim went to a local bar where they spent less than an hour.

They then went to the Komatipoort police barracks where Maluleka stays.

"On arrival at the accused's residence he asked her to have sex with him.

"The girlfriend claims that she refused," said Khumalo.

"The accused allegedly produced his service pistol and pressed it against the victim's head before forcing himself on her," added Khumalo.

Maluleka later took the woman home. She allegedly called him to discuss a possible out-of-court settlement regarding the alleged rape.

Maluleka apparently said he would meet her at a later stage because he was still at his father's funeral.

The woman claims that after waiting in vain for Maluleka, she then decided to lay rape charges against him at the Komatipoort police station on Friday last week.

Police have also confiscated Maluleka's service pistol as it forms part of the investigation.

Mpumalanga provincial police spokesman, Captain Leonard Hlathi, said internal disciplinary steps would be taken against Maluleka.

In a separate incident, Constable Patrick Mchunu, who was attached to KaNyamazane police station was recently discharged from the police service for raping a female inmate inside a police cell.
