Three student tourists will return home with bad memories of South Africa after a taxi in which they were travelling was hijacked in Chatsworth, near Durban, yesterday.
Susan Gassioutiru from Spain, Connie Lieu from the US and Faah Xalsadi from Canada had hired a taxi to Chatsworth when the incident happened. They were stopped at Mobeni Heights intersection by three armed men.
The men ordered them and their driver out of the car and grabbed all their belongings, including cellphones before they fled the scene.
The terrified medical students told the police that they were left stranded by the road side after the incident.
Police spokesman Danelia Veldhuizen said the students were in the country for a month-long holiday.
No one was injured during the incident.
"The taxi was later found abandoned in Durban's Lamontville township.
"We are investigating a case of theft and that of hijacking, but no one has been arrested at this stage," said Veldhuizen.
